All are welcome to join in the Celebration to rally for Advocacy in the fight against cancer. It could be enlightening!

www.acscan.org

Celebration on the Hill 2006 is an American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network event celebrating cancer survivorship and empowering survivors and others to advocate for laws that will help fight the disease. On September 19-20, 2006, nearly 4,000 American Cancer Society "Celebration Ambassadors" will gather in Washington, DC for Celebration on the Hill 2006—a unique event that will show our country's lawmakers how the American Cancer Society and its sister organization the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network is waging the fight against cancer in communities nationwide.
Organized by the American Cancer Society's sister issue advocacy organization, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, Ambassadors will meet with their members of Congress and let them know that fighting cancer is a priority to their constituents back home.

The goals for Celebration on the Hill 2006 include:

Making cancer a priority with elected officials
Expanding advocacy outreach
Advancing a healthy public policy agenda
Mobilizing the American Cancer Society Cancer Action NetworkSM

First held in 2002, Celebration on the Hill ushered in a new era of building cancer awareness with policymakers everywhere.

Lynne Smith Fund Has Had Over 2000 Hits!!

Thanks for clicking and sharing this site with your friends and family members.

Remember to check in and leave a comment. She herself had it discreetly performed on TV.

The test that makes grown men whimper and women who have given birth to five children flinch is the colonoscopy. It's the most thorough examination for early signs of colorectal cancer, but there are less-invasive, less-expensive tests such as the sigmoidoscopy, that also provide early warnings.

I've had 'em all, the sigmoidoscopy not long after my mother was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in 1976. She received that terrible news shortly after her brother had died of colon cancer, and so my doctor said it wasn't too soon to be screened.

I was younger than most people when I had my first colonoscopy. A few weeks ago I had my second one, and I'll have the test every three years from now on, in accordance with the advice of Dr. Timothy Paulk of the Digestive Disease Clinic. My family history trumps other risk indicators: eating a lot of fatty foods, smoking at all, drinking excessive alcohol, failing to exercise, being overweight.

The test is by no means a dreadful ordeal. The worst part is drinking 8 ounces every 15 minutes for three long hours a bland pharmaceutical product amusingly named Golytely, and you will. Go.

This cleansing procedure gets tiresome and traps you near a bathroom. You can't eat anything to speak of, and nothing at all from the night before the procedure. Yet, a funny thing happened to me at some point during this preparation: I began to feel incredibly virtuous, pure as the driven snow, light of spirit, and bored enough that I was more than ready to get on with the colonoscopy. Which is a piece of cake.

You will be sedated and have a nice nap, waking up to a pleasant desire to have a bite to eat, but probably not a triple cheeseburger. Remember, your body has adjusted to your 24-hour fast and is appreciating how your favorite jeans aren't so tight now.

Most likely, you'll then get a doctor's report that helps guide your future health-care habits, but which will not give you any bad news. But if the test results do show a condition of concern, such as polyps, which are typically removed during the test, you are already many steps ahead of Katie Couric's husband. He died of not bothering to be screened for subtle conditions that can take a decade to turn into cancer.

You would also be far ahead of my mother, who although she is 87 today, has lived for nearly 30 years with her digestive system rerouted by a full and irreversible colonectomy, which she has handled with grace, mentioning it only rarely and then as "a nuisance that you get used to."

Her experience has committed me and my siblings to diligence and just a touch of evangelism regarding The Test.

It is of great concern to me that 42 million Americans over 50 are not getting screened for this cancer, with black Americans especially at risk. Though it is the nation's No. 2 cancer killer, and will take more than 55,000 lives this year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says 60 percent of those deaths could be prevented through routine screening. Medicare pays for the screenings and most insurance policies cover them in part. But money and insurance are not the biggest parts of the problem, for there are simpler, cheaper tests to start with and the CDC has just started a free-screening project in five areas nationwide. It may, it should, be expanded nationwide to attack this killer.

In the meantime, don't be a wimp: Get the test. It's not going to kill you.

Thanks For The PhotoMosaic Tile

Thank you to whomever donated a photo mosaic tile to Lynne's Family for the American Cancer Society and added The Lynne Smith Fund to the Charity list. This month, when my 41-year old son found a small amount of blood on his toilet tissue, he insisted on a colonoscopy. The doctor did find a polyp and it was removed. Thank you to Lynne and her family, none of us will let symptoms go unnoticed and we will all insist on a proper test to diagnose colon cancer. Our sadness at losing the vivacious Lynne will be replaced with vigilance and spreading the word on the silent killer known as colon cancer.
With love and appreciation to Lynne's family & friends, Puddy Knabb

Posted at 11:26AM on Jul 23rd 2006 by Puddy Knabb

Guidelines for Colon Cancer Prevention

Colorectal cancer (cancers of either the colon or rectum) is the second most common cancer in the U.S. and one of the deadliest. One in five colorectal patients will probably die because most cases are not diagnosed until a late stage of the disease.  Seventy five percent (75%) of all colon cancer cases are random i.e. no prior family history existed. We are working hard to reduce the mortality rate through awareness and early detection.  You can save your life or the life of a loved one by following these guidelines;

1. Get Screened.. Detected early, progression of colorectal cancer is entirely preventable. A colonoscopy is your best defense. If polyps are found (small bumps that can become cancerous), they are removed during the test.

2. Diet - the quicker food moves through your colon the better. High fiber, low fat is the way to a healthier colon. Red meat is the number one risk factor connected to colorectal cancer. Eat lots of vegetables, fruits, fish and white meat and take fiber supplement and you will reduce your risk. Avoid refined sugar and white flour.

3. Exercise - studies suggest regular exercise reduces the risk of all cancers so get walking!

4. Supplements - Dietary antioxidants such as vitamin E, calcium, vitamin D and the B-vitamin folic
acid may also reduce your risk of contracting colorectal cancer and aid in reversing early stages of this cancer.

These guidelines are based on review of many studies. However, we can not stress enough how testing is your only true defense as this disease is silent with little or no symptoms. The ironic thing about the "risk" factors we have researched is that Lynne was not in any "risk" group. She did not eat red meat her diet was for the most part vegetarian. She was fit (running after 3 young children will do that for you) and she had been taking vitamins before, during and after her pregnancies. There was no prior family history of colon cancer. Lynne at 37 was well under the age of high-risk which is over 50. So don't wait for symptoms, get tested and live longer!

Ginger Shown to Protect Against Colorectal Cancer

(Reprinted from the World's Healthiest Foods Website)

Gingerols, the main active components in ginger and the ones responsible for its distinctive flavor, may also inhibit the growth of human colorectal cancer cells, suggests research presented at the Frontiers in Cancer Prevention Research, a major meeting of cancer experts that took place in Phoenix, AZ, October 26-30, 2003.

In this study, researchers from the University of Minnesota's Hormel Institute fed mice specially bred to lack an immune system a half milligram of -gingerol three times a week before and after injecting human colorectal cancer cells into their flanks. Control mice received no -gingerol.

Tumors first appeared 15 days after the mice were injected, but only 4 tumors were found in the group of -gingerol-treated mice compared to 13 in the control mice, plus the tumors in the -gingerol group were smaller on average. Even by day 38, one mouse in the -gingerol group still had no measurable tumors. By day 49, all the control mice had been euthanized since their tumors had grown to one cubic centimeter (0.06 cubic inch), while tumors in 12 of the -gingerol treated mice still averaged 0.5 cubic centimeter—half the maximum tumor size allowed before euthanization.

Research associate professor Ann Bode noted, "These results strongly suggest that ginger compounds may be effective chemopreventive and/or chemotherapeutic agents for colorectal carcinomas."

In this first round of experiments, mice were fed ginger before and after tumor cells were injected. In the next round, researchers will feed the mice ginger only after their tumors have grown to a certain size. This will enable them to look at the question of whether a patient could eat ginger to slow the metastasis of a nonoperable tumor. Are they optimistic? The actions of the University of Minnesota strongly suggest they are. The University has already applied for a patent on the use of -gingerol as an anti-cancer agent and has licensed the technology to Pediatric Pharmaceuticals (Iselin, N.J.).

Lynne With Ben

It has been 3 months since Lynne passed. To reflect on what we have accomplished in these three months is mind-boggling. We have raised funds in Lynne's name for her babies. We have seen many of Lynne's friends and family members get screened for Colon Cancer and some have caught early stage cancer. We have created a website that has been published as a link by national cancer websites for our content, which is informing thousands of curious people how - exactly - to get a colonoscopy without paying too much. We are more aware of our body signals. We are talking about Colon Cancer symptoms, without shame. When I spoke at Lynne's funeral, I had no idea why I mentioned her "purpose". I just had to believe that there was some 'reason'. Maybe, we can glean some greater meaning from all of this. Maybe...she has saved a few lives.

-Stacey B.

Please Do NOT overpay for your Colonoscopy!

Different institutes and insurances are charging for and covering colonoscopies in very different ways. One reader received a bill for a colonoscopy which was a staggering $13,000+ although was 80% covered by insurance it still left a patient balance of $2,600. However, the good news is another reader received an insurance statement for $432 with zero $ due to be paid by patient for the exact same procedure.

On further research we have the following advice for you:

(1) Ensure your Doctor refers you for a colonoscopy based on "medical reasons"i.e. one or more of the following family history, unexplained anemia, fatigue, blood in stool, change in bowel movements etc. If you are over 50 you are entitled to a colonoscopy as part of routine physical check-up.
(2) Ensure your Doctor refers you to a Gastroenterology specialist that is(a)in your insurance network and (b) Performs the colonoscopy at their own surgery.
(3) Check in advance with the specialist’s office as to the full cost and with your insurance company for their coverage so you know that you have little or no payment for the test.

If you do not have Health Insurance, research your State Health Departments website and look for specialists that offer the test for free or reduced price for the uninsured.

ABOVE ALL;

(1) Where possible, avoid getting your colonoscopy at a hospital facility this apparently is where large unnecessary $'s get added to your bill.
(2) Shop around, ask questions. We have heard of several people who have received the test the total insurance price of $1,100 with insurance paying all or most of the bill.

All this being said, don't let the extra effort (a couple of phone calls) put you off getting a colonoscopy remember;

The True Cost of A Colonoscopy - Means Saving Your Life = Priceless.

Welcome to the Lynne Smith Fund Blog

Many new visitors are joining us daily from within the USA and all over the world. This could be attributed to our coverage on reknowned organization's websites such as The Cancer Blog.

http://www.thecancerblog.com/category/colon-and-rectal-cancer/

If you are new to the site we would like you to spend a little while getting to know Lynne Marie Smith, a wonderful, 37 year old mother of 3 who passed away after a 2 month battle with colon cancer. We have no doubt you will be touched by her spirit.

Originally, this site was set up as a forum to update family and friends on a private fundraising drive to help her family. We were hugely sucessful in that goal, raising over $20,000 for her children's college fund.

As she began to realize the seriousness of her condition, Lynne appealed to friends to get tested.

And so as time and circumstance evolves, we are all committed to raising people's awareness of colon cancer, armed with the knowledge that with early screening this is the one cancer for which there is already a cure. We have already heard of people being spared from colon cancer because they took action as a direct result of Lynne's story.

If you have a story to share pertaining to colon cancer and/or early screening please leave a comment.

Here is some shocking news as you read this..

If you are female YOU, are more likely to die of colon cancer than breast cancer - yet you will be routinely checked for breast cancer 10 years before colon cancer.

If you are male YOU, are more likely to die of colon cancer than prostrate cancer - yet you are checked at every annual physical for prostrate cancer - many years before your 50th birthday (when you will be expected to get your first colonoscopy).

There does not need to be any family history. Lynne was the first known member in her extended family to have colon cancer.

This is the ONE cancer that the test (colonoscopy) could be the cure. The procedure could remove any suspicious polyps in your colon (bumps that can develop into cancer).

Please read other posts on this site. On Saturday night, some of
Lynne's oldest friends got together to help each other through this difficult time. Some of us had
not seen each other in years. Immediately, there was laughter and reminiscing. Reflecting on
our years of friendship, it occurs to us that special friends, friends you've shared your childhood
with, through adulthood, sharing milestones like marriage and children, life's joys and losses -
they become more than a friend, they become a part of who you are, part of your soul.
Today, each of us feels the terrible loss of Lynne in our lives, but we are also here to celebrate
the gift of her beautiful spirit that has touched and enriched each of us and will forever fill our
souls. So, we thank God for giving us Lynne, and for allowing us to grow up with her. I
remember in Jr. High hanging around In Lynne's bedroom dreaming of kissing our boyfriends
(which we didn't have yet) in Bloomingdales entryway - we thought it was romantic. Don't ask
me why... We all loved the person she was, and the people we became when we were with her.
(Stacey Bonnell)
Lynne was pure, angelic, ethereal, soft and sweet but with just the right amount of spice. As
teenagers living in Malvern, we weren't inundated with exciting things to do. But Lynne had a
way of making the ordinary, extraordinary. Lynne organized Formal dinners and a big yellow
bus to take us to Prom. Lynne was creative and spontaneous which we desperately needed.
Lynne never, ever forgot a birthday. You could always call Lynne when you needed an address
or a phone number. When all else failed, Lynne would never hesitate to call your parents to find
you. Lynne made her friendships a priority and we all felt valued as a result. Lynne was a leader
who never left any one out. She was the glue that kept our circle of friends together. When I had
moved three times and fell out of touch, Lynne made sure she let me know when something
important happened at home. Lynne had a list of "50 Things to Do" in her life. One was:"Move
Away". Although she never moved far, she learned that everything she needed was right here
all along.
It has been said that we are all born with a purpose. Once that purpose is fulfilled, we go. I
know, all of us here, can think of a reason why Lynne came into our lives. I also know, all of us,
wish that her 'purpose' hadn't been fulfilled....so soon.
(Kathy Deanna)
Lynne was a Wonderful Mother. She always put family first. She adored her children. Around
them she was playful and magical. She cherished her relationship with her husband. He was the
love of her life. Lynne will always be a role model for us as we continue to develop our own
families.

(Stacey) Today, we make a commitment, on behalf of Lynne’s oldest friends, to continue to
nurture our friendships as Lynne would have wanted for us.

(Susan) Today, we make a commitment to embrace you, Mike and support you in every way
we can.

(Kathy) Today, we make a commitment to keep Lynne's beautiful spirit alive for her children,
always.
posted by FriendofLynne @ 8:17 AM 0 comments links to this post

Plea Hits National Headlines

Today we were honored by a visitor from a national blogsite that is designed to assist people dignosed with cancer. As with most things that have to do with Lynne, nothing seems adequate. I'm always afraid my lack of eloquence will not do her justice. She was everything that you could imagine. Her interactions with the children was nothing short of magic, day in and day out. With her constant optimism and enthusiasm, she was inspiring to be around. The smile thats present in every picture was there with or without the camera. For nine years I was greeted with pleasant words and that smile. The kids and I were lucky to have had her for the short time she was here. Lynne Marie was truely a special person. The support from family and friends has been overwhelming, a testiment to the kind of person Lynne was. To everyone who has sent thoughts or prayers, cards, donated time or money, sent positive energy our way, the kids and I thank you.

The words seem to fall short, but thank you.

Michael, Benjamin, Riley, Shelby

Lynne Graduates From High School - 1986

1986 - High School Graduation
ANSWER TO EMAIL QUESTION: TRUE

SEE BELOW FOR FURTHER EXPLANATION

23 Year Old Survivor of Colon Cancer Creates 40 Foot Colon

(The following was reprinted from a website called "The Colon Club". This is a nonprofit organization that increases awareness around Colon Cancer in people who are younger than 50.)

The Colon Club was founded in 2003 by Molly McMaster, 28, a colon cancer survivor who was diagnosed on her 23rd birthday, and Hannah Vogler, 30, whose cousin and Molly's friend, Amanda Sherwood Roberts, died of the disease at the age of 27. Our main goal is to educate as many people as possible, as early as possible, about colorectal cancer in interesting and out-of-the-box ways. Our wishes are for people to have "colon talk" in their everyday lives, to know the risk factors and symptoms, and to get screened when it is appropriate for them.

Check out pictures page for more pictures

On the "Today" show in November of 2001, Katie Couric told Molly that if she came up with something crazy for National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month in March, the "Today" show would cover it. The wheels started turning, and one day in the shower Molly came up with the idea to build the Colossal Colon®!
“Coco,” as the Colossal Colon® is affectionately known, is a 40-foot long, 4-foot tall oversized model of the human colon that is designed to educate about colorectal cancer and other diseases of the colon. Visitors who crawl through the Colossal Colon® will see Crohn's disease, diverticulosis, ulcerative colitis, hemorrhoids, cancerous and non-cancerous polyps, and various stages of colon cancer.
The Colon Club’s goal is to educate younger people about colorectal cancer, and the Colossal Colon is the perfect educational tool to do just that. Coco gets everyone talking about colorectal cancer, which is one of the first steps in eliminating it. Adults and children alike can crawl through or look through windows to check out the various features inside Coco.
Since 2002, Coco has visited 74 cities in 34 states and Canada, and has been hosted at hospitals, malls, convention centers, state fairs, museums, a football tournament, an amusement park, and other unique locations. Click here to read more about the history of the Colossal Colon®.

http://www.colonclub.com/crazyprojects.html

Lynne Saves Lives

As an immediate result of this campaign 8 of Lynne's close family and friends have insisted upon and scheduled colonoscopies long before the "recommended" age of 50. To date, 4 have completed their colonoscopies all finding the procedure painless and simple. Here is the shocking news... 3 out of 4 of the people tested so far(all under the age of 50) have had polyps (tiny bumps that can become cancerous if left in the colon) . That is a shocking 75% folks... it is time to take heed and get yourself and your family checked. Thankfully these polyps have been removed and now all 4 of Lynne's family & friends can rest easy knowing they will not contract colon cancer once they continue to monitor their colon (it is usually recommended that you recieve a colonoscopy every 3 -5 years once a family history or polyps are discovered).

Symptoms of Colorectal Cancer

The most common symptom is no symptom

Change in bowel habits (diarrhea, constipation, narrow stools)

unexplained weight loss, vomitting, lack of energy, unexplained anemia

Blood (often not visible) in the stool (poop) or from rectum (bum)

Abdominal pain/discomfort (gas, bloating, cramps, feeling that the bowel doesn't empty completely)

If you have one or more of these symptoms for more than a few weeks, see a doctor and get a colonoscopy! So far NOBODY has had difficulty convincing their Doctor to refer them for a colonoscopy.

Please hear Lynne's plea.. get scheduled for a colonoscopy asap... remember the most common symptom is no symptom at all. Please let us know of your personal effort to put an end to colon cancer.

Lynne Smith

I have not turned my back on you, so there is no need to cry. I'm watching you from heaven, just beyond the morning sky. I've seen you almost fall apart, when you could barely stand. I asked the Lord to comfort you, and watched him take your hand. He told me you are in more pain, then I could ever be. He wiped his eyes and swallowed hard, then gave your hand to me. Although you may not feel my touch, or see me by your side. I've whispered that I love you, while I wiped each tear you cried. So please try not to ache for me, we'll meet again one day, beyond the dark and stormy sky, a Rainbow lights the way.

-Anonymous

My Journey To Colonoscopy...

(Mt. I need to put my money where my mouth is. I went for my annual physical today. Honestly, I haven't had a physical in 4 years. With small kids, we moms barely ever think of ourselves. I could be at the Pediatricians office 4 times a week with my children, yet, I ignore any aches and pains that I may have. There just isn't enough time.

Today, I made time. I filled out paperwork and finally told a doctor about symptoms that I am having that I never want to talk about. You know why?? Its about my bottom. This is never a fun subject for anyone. I talked about it today. I had an exam on my bum today. You know what? It was very quick. It didn't hurt at all.

She did a "hemmocult" (blood in stool) test. She got the results instantly and it looked fine. Because of symptoms that I am having she asked me to go to see a Gastrointestinal doctor and get a colonoscopy. Which I wanted to do anyway. She gave me paperwork to get blood work done. That will show if I am anemic at all. All in all, it took about 6 minutes.

Whether or not you want to know - I have decided to journal my colonoscopy process... the good, bad and ugly along with the prep and the results. If I can do this- YOU certainly can!

Stay Tuned...

Wonderful News....

Everyone -

Mike let me know today that the contributions that you have kindly given are safely in the children's accounts. Friends felt the need to help but
how?? We started the fund. It started as a nanny/help "slush"
fund. When Lynne passed it became a fund for her three
beautiful children.

Lynne asked friends to get early Colon Cancer Screening.

Contributions can be sent to:

"The Lynne Smith Fund"
56 Lily Pond Lane
Chester Springs, PA 19425

"Shine On Girl..."

Tonight on my way to bed I began thinking about Lynne. As I looked out my window I was drawn to this bright, individual star. The more I thought about her I began to cry. As I stared at this star I noticed the star slowly disappear and then come back, like a blink of an eye. Deep down inside I felt Lynne's strong presence. As if she heard my thoughts and was talking to me through this star.

As I cried some more the star got brighter. I was transfixed on this star...so bright and beautiful; all on it's own in a sky full of stars. Yet, again it began to fade. Sometimes the star would be gone for a long time and sometimes not so long.

I think life works in a similar way. Sometimes we are with things for a long time and sometimes a short time. And we learn to love every minute we have; whether it's meant to last forever or just be cherished for that small moment.

I wish that Lynne's life on earth wasn't so short. It isn't fair that a disease of such magnitude and speed be given to such a loving, fun, and thoughtful woman. Yet, I think of her tonight as a bright, beautiful star watching over us saying it's alright, I'm fine. So, shine on girl and let us know where you are.... you will always have a special place in our hearts.

-Sara F.

"A Clean Bill of Health is Well Worth the Peace of Mind."

I recently chose to get a colonoscopy after hearing about the tragic death of your friend Lynne of colon cancer. I have been ignoring some occasional bleeding after the birth of my third child. Although this minor bleeding was diagnosed as nothing more than the presence of hemorrhoids, I chose not to take it for granted and got tested. The test is a bit humiliating but having a clean bill of health is well worth the peace of mind. I would recommend anyone with related symptoms take the time to get tested to prevent any symptoms for potentially developing and becoming much more harmful. The only good that can come from losing someone as special as Lynne is having others educate themselves and remember how we must constantly pay attention to our health so we can share our lives with the loved ones around us. Colon Cancer kills more people in the USA each year than Breast Cancer and Aids combined.

Q: Is there a cure for Colon Cancer?

A: Yes!!Early detection is KEY as it is a very treatable cancer if found in time. Colorectal Cancer develops slowly over a long period of time, usually starting out as a small grape-size growth called a polyp on the inner wall of the large intestine, colon and/or rectum. Not all polyps turn into cancer. Screening tests can be used to detect the polyps, allowing their removal during the colonoscopy before cancer ever develops. It is the only disease that THE TEST CAN BE THE CURE.

I Still Want to Contribute to The Lynne Smith Fund...What do I do?

Friends,

I have gotten a lot of questions about contributing to Lynne's Fund. Any contributions that come in from here on out I will still forward directly to Mike Smith and the children. I shared the sad story of Lynne's passing and went on to discuss the warning signs of colon cancer and the statistics I've been reading on this blog site. It turns out that one colleagues husband was a colon cancer survivor. Get this... he had a heart attack and so his doctor performed regular blood tests. One such blood test showed he was anemic. His doctor immediately said, there is only one reason for you to be anemic.. internal bleeding!!! You either have ulcers or colon cancer. He sent him for a colonoscopy and he had colon cancer but was so fortunate that is had not penetrated the colon wall. He was operated on and is now cancer-free!! What an incredible insightful doctor. This is the second time I have heard anemic is one of the warning signs for colon cancer. So many of my friends have been anemic and never had a colonocopy. Another colleague's mother had passed from colon cancer at the age of 73, she was never screened until it was too late. As he said "you know that generation, hard to convince them of screening!". So lets not forget our Mom & Dads in this alert! His siblings have all been tested and you guessed it polyps everywhere. The third colleague was over 50 and she had been screened, they found polyps and removed them, she now gets tested every 3 years. I was amazed that even though all 3 had been personally touched by colon cancer, they knew little of the statistics and symptoms. Thankfully I believe our conversation will prompt them to talk more about this disease and it's prevention and have their relatives get tested AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE. I also found out that recent studies suggest COUSINS are apparently showing the same gene for colon cancer so start finding out about your extended family history. Also remember, just like Lynne, there does not have to be any family history to get this disease, someone has to be the first!. Thank goodness for proactive Doctors.. if you are anemic get tested. Lynne's spirit may have saved some family & freinds of my colleagues yesterday..as they now have the knowledge and are motivated to share... God bless her"... It is a Very Simple Procedure.

I received this recently from a very close friend of Lynne's:

"I asked my internist to have a colonoscopy; I had been to him twice in the
past year for symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. Knowing what Lynne had
been through, I wanted to make sure everything was okay. Luckily
everything was fine. How I wish it would have been fine for her
too!

I know a lot of people are afraid of getting a
colonoscopy, but it really is not bad. It is a very simple
procedure. The prep (drinking the stuff that cleans your system out
the night before) is the worst part. In my case, I was totally
asleep for the 15 minute procedure and don't remember a thing. Afterward,
I woke up from the anesthesia, ate a little something and left the
hospital within an hour. Other than being a little tired from the
anesthesia, I felt fine for the rest of the day."

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://lynnesmithfund.blogspot.com/2006/06/colonoscopy-is-not-bad-it-is-very.html' title='..A Colonoscopy is Not Bad. Fecal refers to stool, while occult means hidden. This non-invasive test can be purchased at a local pharmacy and can be administered in the privacy of your own home. FOBT kits differ in method and accuracy: Newer FOBT kits:Newer FOBT kits (also called immuno-chemical tests) require you to dip a brush into the toilet after having a bowel movement and send the sample to a medical lab. This method is more reliable than older style FOBT tests and does not require any dietary restrictions. This type of FOBT is more accurate than older style FOBTs. These tests cost approximately $25 - $50.

"...Too Young To Be A Candidate for a Colonoscopy"

"Please accept my condolences on the death of Lynne. I recieved this blogsite from a family member of Lynne's and I felt it necessary to share my own personal experience. My brother is a colon-rectal surgeon, so we have the list of warning signs. He also had my husband and me getting the "stick" test through our 30s and 40s (which he sent to us with our birthday cards and then had us send back to him for testing) and then told me if I hadn't had a colonoscopy by the time I visited him the Christmas after I turned 50, he'd perform it himself! So, we're aware. But all that knowledge (which we passed along to everyone we knew) didn't change the behavior of my sister-in-law (my husband's side), who died six years ago because she was "too young" to be a candidate for a colonoscopy according to her weird doctor or to my brother's brother-in-law, who succumbed at age 32 - he died 3 months after diagnosis. Like your Lynne, no one else in the family had the disease or any other kind of cancer for that matter - - he was in a high-stress job and thought he had only occasional indigestion. A routine physical for a promotion discovered the mass. It's very sad. Please feel free to post this if it will help anyone reading to take action on their health.

Concerned Family Aquaintance"

If you know of anyone who has been touched by colon cancer, please share their story with us by e-mailing it to staceybon@msn.com. It is self-explanatory. Read on.. S

Regarding my colonoscopy…It was so weird! I had a baby in July. I had the normal bleeding, but it continued. In December I still noticed blood in my stool, and for some reason I was nervous about it. I remember telling my husband about it. I did not know why, but it made me uncomfortable. I did not do anything about it, but got to the point that I did not “look” when I went to the bathroom. Ignorance is bliss, I guess. Then, I got the call from Lynne, and I could not believe it. She told me what was going on with her, and I shared with her my experience. She had told me that she had put it all to being pregnant and to just having a baby. I thought the same thing. So, she asked me to promise I would go to the doctor. I did, and they found a polyp that the doctor said was definitely pre-cancerous. He said had I waited till I was 50…the recommended age for a colonoscopy…who knows what would have been found.

I have shared this story with so many people, and many friends have gotten tested. Lynne’s story is heart breaking and I think it scares people. I know it scared me.

Know The Signs - Get a Colonoscopy!

I received this post and thought it most definitely needed to be shared..

Dear Friends,

Lynne believed in the big picture, and that if she was to die of Colon Cancer that something greater would come of it. What the true reason for Lynne's sad untimely passing is, we may never know in our lifetime. However we do believe she would want us to help prevent others from dying unnecessarily from this silent, very prevalent disease. So please if any of the following relates to you please get a colonoscopy, don't take no for an answer, INSIST on the test;

Silent Symptoms of Colon Cancer -

unexplained change in bowel habits

chronic diarrhea or constipate

blood in the stool

persistent abdominal pain

unexpected or sudden weight loss

chronic tiredness or unexplained fatigue

Remember if you have ANY one of these symptoms talk to your doctor. Young Mothers can think these symptoms are part of natural child birthing process.. They may not be, you should always talk to your doctor about concerns and get tested. Men & Women, before & after the age of 50 - please get tested.

Please don't waste time. Lynne passed away 2 months after diagnosis, by the time her symptoms had her very concerned it was too late. Lynne was the first known member of her extended family to have this disease. She was not blessed with the advance warning you are now receiving.

Colon cancer kills more people in the USA each year than breast cancer and aids combined. There is no need for anyone to die of colon cancer. Early detection is KEY as it is a very treatable cancer if found in time.

Please make your Doctors appointment today. We have already heard from friends and family who have taken a colonoscopy since Lynne's passing and have discovered polyps that have been removed. These people can now live colon-cancer-free. You can too. Share your story of success with us all. Get tested in memory of Lynne.

Posted by a concerned friend.

Colon Cancer Awareness

The following is reprinted from a website by Colon Cancer Network. They feel that screening should be done much earlier for Colon Cancer and are trying to do something about it. If you press the 'details' link below it should navigate you to their website. I'd be interested in your comments. I'm not advocating this but it is very interesting... Stacey

Colorectal cancer (which includes cancer of the colon, rectum, anus, and appendix) is the second-leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States. Only lung cancer claims more lives. This year nearly 131,000 Americans will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer and 56,000 will die. CCNetwork is committed to making sure that no one has to go through this alone. And more importantly, we are committed to ending this cancer in our lifetime.

"Of all forms of inequality, injustice in health care is the most shocking and inhumane."
- Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Project MARCH
Screening for All. Colon Cancer for None.
When: March 2007
Where: Washington, D.C.

What We'll Do:

We will meet at the Washington Monument grounds at 10am and march to the Capitol. The purpose is to demand that screening be made available for all adults and that a fund be set up for screening those with no health insurance. DETAILS

What You Need to Know:

Screening should be available for all adults. Not just those 50 and older.

Medical professionals are beginning to say it should be at least age 40. But no one is even attempting to stop colon cancer in anyone under 50. Leaving 13,000 people every year with no hope of avoiding this cancer.

Just three or four more screenings and we could nearly eliminate all colon cancer.

But if it is to happen, you must speak up.
If you don't, who will speak up for you?

The 3 Day Race for The Cure

Nancy McDaid has signed up to do the 3 Day Race for the Cure.

(Susan) Today, we make a commitment to embrace you, Mike and support you in every way

we can.

(Kathy) Today, we make a commitment to keep Lynne's beautiful spirit alive for her children,

always.

Lynne Smith Donor List

Lynne Smith Fund – Donors List
(names below are in random order)

John Faga & Family
Wendy & Dave Johnson
Melanie Carrow & Family
Jennifer Morrison & Family
Danielle Grant & Matthew Hoeven
Christian Allaire
Maureen & Jon Thir
Meg & Tommy Claffey
Michael & Heather McDevitt
Barbara Grant & Steve Beaver
Brad Finnegan
Walter Grant
Brian & Sara Funk
Andrea L’Tainen & Family
Joni Oppasser
Kathy & John Deanna
Jane & Pete Buxton
Tara McDaid
Mike & Nancy McDaid
Daniel Lobb & Family
Jennifer & Dwight Powers
Jeannine Windisch & Family
Puddy Knabb
Kelly Steele & Family
Beth Noland Lauderback & Family
Nadia Rassas
Mr. & Mrs. Campbell
Mr. and Mrs. Walsh
Mrs. Mc Daid
Andrew and Caroline Clifford
Beth Roland
Laura & Sean McDonald
Stacey & Dave Bonnell
Susan Hunt & Tony Clifford
Karen Ibach & Jim Dyksen
Mr. & Mrs. Erickson
Amy Gleason & Family
Harry & Susan Ridgeway
Adam McKay & Shira Piven
Cheri Rassas
Gervus & Eleanor Rafalko
Kelly Smith Eberhardt
Diane & Gerald Houseknecht
Maureen & John Baur
Michelle & Matt Eisenhardt
Greg Smith and Family
Dave & Sandy Civitello
Frank & Laura Mannarino
Matt & Tara McDonald
Tracy & Stephen Phillips
Christine & Steve Brogan
Evans Pancoast & Family
Ms. Eleanor Knopfle
Lenny Rafalko & Alison Kelly & Family
Jackie & Roy Swinehardt
Jean & Chris Hill
Helen & Jeffrey Camp
Linda, Tim, Caitlin & Danny Murphy
Environmental Resources Management
Tracy and Anthony Poremski
John T.
